GRB071028B, a burst behind large amounts of dust in an unabsorbed galaxy

چکیده
Aims. We report on the discovery and properties of the fading afterglow and underlying host galaxy of GRB 071028B, thereby facilitating a detailed comparison between these two. Methods. Observations were performed with the Gamma-ray Burst Optical and Near-infrared Detector at the 2.2 m telescope on the La Silla Paranal Observatory in Chile. We conducted five observations from 1.9 d to 227.2 d after the trigger and obtained deep images in the g′r′i′z′ and JHKs bands. Results. Based on accurate seven-channel photometry covering the optical to near-infrared wavelength range, we derive a photometric redshift of z = 0.94 +0.05 −0.10 for the unabsorbed host galaxy of GRB 071028B. In contrast, we show that the afterglow with an intrinsic extinction of ASB V = (0.70± 0.11) mag is moderately absorbed and requires a relatively flat extinction curve. According to the reported Swift/BAT observations, the energetics yield an isotropic energy release of Erest γ,iso = (1.4 +2.4 −0.7) × 1051 erg.

Probing the matter at stellar, galactic and intergalactic scales
We report the discovery of the optical afterglow (OA) of the long-duration gamma-ray burst GRB 030429, and present a comprehensive optical/near-infrared dataset used to probe the matter at different distance scales, i.e. in the burst environment, in the host galaxy and in an intervening absorber. A break in the afterglow light curve is seen approximately 1 day from the onset of the burst. The l...
متن کاملSmall-Angle Scattering of X-Rays from Extragalactic Sources by Dust in Intervening Galaxies
Gamma-ray bursts are now known to be a cosmological population of objects, which are often accompanied by X-ray and optical afterglows. The total energy emitted in the afterglow can be similar to the energy radiated in the gamma-ray burst itself. If a galaxy containing a large column density of dust is near the line of sight to a gamma-ray burst, small-angle scattering of the X-rays due to diff...

baryonic matter distribution in the large-scale structures is one of the main questions in cosmology. This distribution can provide valuable information regarding the processes of galaxy formation and evolution. On the other hand, the missing baryon problem is still under debate. One of the most important cosmological structures for studying the rate and the distribution of the baryons is gal...

In contradiction to the simple AGN unification schemes, there exists a significant population of broad line, z ∼ 2 QSOs which have heavily absorbed X-ray spectra. These objects have luminosities and redshifts characteristic of the sources that produce the bulk of the QSO luminosity in the universe. Our follow up observations in the submil-limetre show that these QSOs are embedded in ultralumi-n...

We present upper limits on the 850 μm and 450 μm fluxes of the warm hyperluminous (bolometric luminosity Lbol > 10 13 L⊙) galaxies IRAS P09104+4109 (z = 0.442) and IRAS F15307+3252 (z = 0.926), derived from measurements using the SCUBA bolometer array on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope. Hot luminous infrared sources like these are thought to differ from more normal cold ultraluminous infrared...
